(our club coach is intolerable at the moment, an ex-protege won a minor classic the other day, and his lad has just got himself a pro contract)

I painfully recall having exactly the same experience, in a first event of the season. I would suggest that you don't panic, largely stick with your current training, hang on as long as possible in your next event AND complete the distance. Your previous form should quickly return as you've done the basics and, with your experience, you should know how to adjust to race speed. Good luck.
