I'm thinking of going to the Grenoble region to watch this year's Alps stages.

I can fly into Geneva and get the TGV to Grenoble, but I don't have a clue how I'd get to the mountains! Hire car isn't an option. Has anyone done this without a car or bike?

Cheers for that. Excuse my ignorance, but will my lack of french make it difficult for me to get around?

Currently thinking of this route (by train)

Gap (stage finish) --->Briancon (passing through)---Col Du Galibier (finish)---Alp d'Huez(finish) and then Grenoble (TT)

The mountain stages will require a lot of walking/hitching

I know ...I was thinking the same a bit ...but there must be a reason Smile

I'm cycling from Nimes to Gap via veynes then up the Izoard to Briancon then over to alpe d huwz ..on a bike you have a lot more choices.. is it an option? you can chuck a tent on then that gves you a lot more possbilities eg camping at the top of alpe d huwz etc

I dont think the train goes along that valley...if you are going Brriancon to Grenoble think the tran goes south and round...there is a bus/coach that goes from Brancon to Grenoble though and you can get off at Bourg etc but you might struggle gettng to Grenoble the next day

I only have my race bike and no bike bag. Bike would be absolutely perfect though...

Maybe I've left it too late this year

Thanks for the input though!

If you're planning to walk up the Galibier to get close to the finish, that's a very, very long walk! It took me around two hours to ride up it last week, although the driving rain and cold temperatures made it fly by Wink

Good luck!
