Tubs or tubeless clinchers are what i should use, but i'm too tight and lazy to do either, so i still use clinchers.

Why no option for people that use both?

Surely they would have a preference for one or the other?

Question doesn't say anything about a preference does it.

Would tubs not come into their own when conditions become slippery? i.e. if the gound's rock hard why risk your expensive tubs if it doesn't make much difference. Not that I know anything about cross.

Indeed it doesn't, but the inference is clear the question relates to one's preference for tubs or clinchers, after all, most use both in most types of racing.

Tubs can be ridden when flat after punturing. Try that with clinchers and they don't go far and get cut by the rims. So tubs every time. The pro's know this and use tubs (unless someone is paying an absolute silly amount of money for them to ride a brand of clincher).

tubs for racing ,clinchers for warm up laps with a final lap on the race wheels.is there any benefit to riding a flat tub over running? surely it would risk knackering the tub up or risk rolling it?the only time a big difference is felt is if its really muddy and you have the right tub on at the right pressue i reckon

Well, you can run a tub at 1-2 atmospheres (14-28 psi old money) on a softish but fast course, and they work on harder sections, which is a bit more difficult with a clincher unless it has very stiff sides. As for running versus riding a flat, give me the ride anytime as it will be easier on the legs and a bit quicker.

What about tubs or clinchers for MTB?

A large number of the top riders are now using tubs (Dugast mainly) jusdging by the practice sessions this week.

FWIW i ran clinchers (expensive, high tpi ones, very flexible sidewalls) from 20psi upwards when riding cross (purely historical info, as these days i'm a bit heavy for that sort of pressure)

Tubeless, all the time, not a huge variety of tub tread patterns available (think there are only about 5 or 6 available) and even if you do have the right tyre available to swap to, it takes a couple of days to sort with gluing and so on.

Tubeless i can do in half an hour or less.

The pros probably have three or four sets of wheels sat waiting, a dry set a wet set, a muddy set and a general set (probably spares in the technical zone).

And quite likely a matching set of 29's,and for some 700c's too. For the normal guys like us its not going to make much difference at all, theres so much to take into account not least, weight of rider, experience, ability, cost.
For anyone contemplating the choice, ask yourself two questions, whats it going to cost ? and will it make any difference ?
For god 's sake don't be swayed by what the pro's are using, what they are using more often than not is totally irrelevant to us at grass root level.
I'll give you an example,I was privileged to go to the pre season technical session with a major tub manufacturer,in Switzerland, along with senior technical guys from some of the worlds top pro road teams. One of the topics for discussion was tub sizing, and that the "big" teams are pushing for larger diameter tubs, the preference being 28 mm,the reason for this ? Only one nothing to do with speed, rolling resistance or anything technical...........just rider comfort.Frames and wheels are now so stiff that there is no give at all,and if you are on the bike for 5,6 or 7 hours everyday, then you will know about it.
The reason that we have'nt seen tubs of this size yet is also simple, the frame manufacturers can't afford to re tool to put the amount of frames out to match the potential demand. But you can be sure that in the not to distant future we'll be having ,28 mm this 28 mm that pushed down our throats, because there faster, less rolling resistant etc etc............sorry to go on so,again!!

Doesn't matter if the GB male seniors use tubs or clinchers, early prediction is that they will still get royally tonked at the 2013 Worlds

But why?

This is the one discipline we don't excel in.

Time for Hammond to join the coaching staff?

Time to stop entering no-hopers until they've proved themselves at international level (ie Belgium, not some USA pre-season chipper)
