patch them with some old lycra if that doesnt work chuck them away

Depends where the holes are.
Stitching lycra or patching it is a waste of time.

not true I have a patch on my knee on my Leg Warmers that was patched up with lycra some 3 years ago and still holding strong

Do you just use a cotton thread to patch it with?

Lycra stretches, cotton doesn't. Even cotton thread shrinks slightly in the wash. Look wrinkly if you wish Very Happy
