Llandis is the best bet.

Valverde - completely unproven - has he actually finished a grand tour yet?

Hincapie looks like he's a skeleton now, I read somewhere he's lost between 6 and 10 kilo's! If that's true, he should be able to get up the hors categories near the leading group, he can TT almost as fast as LA too. Discovery also need an american as team leader in the tour, it's the only race the US audience knows about, so I might check out the early betting on him for a podium, as long as he gets himself a proper set of forks.

Landis and Leipheimer are the best bets with Hincapie an unknown quantity as a GC rider.

Can't see it - Landis looks like the most likely but got to be honest and say I haven't been following his form - on previous years I reckon he'll be just short.

Is Hincapie back riding after his crash yet ?

Oops - I stand corrected. My feeling is that he was fairly annonymous is both though.
As for quoting Lance's 4th place as precedent. i'd say but the man rode with no racing background that year having just come back from a life threatening illness. Besides I could point to the fact that in the Veulta, Valverde's record is getting worse not better!

He is a great talent but all those who have beaten him at the Veulta have finished well down in the tour in that same year. I just don't see Valverde stepping straight out and winning it.

what goes against valverde/leipheimer/any othe climber is 100km of flat time trials ....
and no particularly hard mountain stages.

it's gonna be a big guy who wins this year

Jan
Floyd
George
Ivan
etc

*CENSORED* even VRs favourite DM would be in with a chance if he'd had more racing miles in his legs

but my money is on landis. a nice 20-1 at the bookies I got .... Wink

If will be stunned if Hincapie gets anyway near the podium!
Landis is looking really good, knows how to handle race leadership and his team really believe in him.
I would dearly love Valverde to win, but I think it's slightly too early and too easy for him, worth a look though.
If Ulrich caries on improving he will win, not enough opportunities for Basso to stitch him up...

The only american that will get near the podium will be Lance, and he'll be handing out the prizes.

True!

The reason I was thinking of Valverde was off the back of him being stronger than a strong Armstrong on that first proper mountain stage last year, before he was forced to abandon.

You're all correct, I also suspect Landis and Hincapie will be sniffing the podium due to the TTs.

Going to be an interesting Tour de France, I can't wait.

Us Ullrich fans will rejoice in a masterclass though Cool
