Denbies Duels is back for 2014 on Sunday 5th October. This is an elimination hillclimb event held at the spectacular Denbies Vineyard near Dorking in the Surrey Hills. Two riders compete on the hill at the same time...in the first round it is all about setting the fastest time you can...a number of the fastest riders then go through to the pure knock out stages...a mixture of TT, Hill Climbing, tactical riding and sprinting...a great event to ride...or watch!

...and to have a good reasonably priced meal there afterwards. Meeting up there with my old Paddington track co-organiser next Tuesday and will look out for any special wine offers.

Back in the early 60s, Bill Best (Orpington CRC) organised a 'Prime-Style' Hill Climb on Ide Hill, near Sevenoaks, Kent.

The event took place in October '61 or 62' and as I recall with six riders in each heat.

Rumour has it that Bill, winner of the Brighton Trophy (London-Brighton) and Catford 24hr TT among many other events, handed his number in for the last time last in 2013.

Cool

Denbies Duels is back! Following an incredible ‘sold out’ debut event that brought some of the stars of the British Cycling scene to Denbies in 2013, Redhill CC and Dorking CC will once again be hosting the Duels event.

Denbies Duels is a side-by-side elimination hillclimb event through Denbies Vineyard near Dorking in Surrey.
(The climb is of similar length and ascent as Box Hill Zig Zag)

There are separate competitions for Men, Women and Juniors as well as various category and class awards including fastest outright time on the day.

Riders of all ages and abilities are encouraged to apply.

For the 1995 European Youth Olympics in Bath I organised this hill climb *CENSORED* TT in heats of 20 for first of three days racing. It went from city centre up to university and the winner had to win from the fastest heat, so no point in sitting in. Eighty three 17 year old riders with maximum of three from each country, with some going on to TdF in their careers.

Although necessary to allow gaps for traffic as it crossed the A4 road, it proved a success and was used in subsequent European Youth Olympics.

Fond memories of being in team of tandems pacing Bill Best in 50 and 25 mile events at Herne Hill. Totally exhausting and exciting with six or more competitors with up to six tandems each on the track at the same time. Spectacular to watch but died out because of lack of tandems. Bill just sat there shouting for more speed and was a real class rider, while we were experienced reasonably useful tandem riders. Really sorry if Bill has handed in his number.

Good to see modern organisers putting on showing initiative at Denbies, which is a favoured lunch (and wine!) place with mates from organising at old Paddington track.
