Cold weather does not ruin knees. Unless you slip on ice and break your kneecap.
Urban myth

Tommy Chambers did just under 800k miles in his lifetime, including many in Scottish winters, almost always in shorts and on fixed.

It depends I guess. As long as the muscles are warm no harm should be done. But BTW: I read that sportsmen can decide for tests trying to find out about antibodies which attack smooth muscles, they are called auto-antibodies. The tests are performed with the help of a blood sample which is taken to the lab and analyzed with the help of kits provided by an antibodies supplier like this http://www.antibodies-online.com/supplier . But apart from a pinching, one does not feel anything.
The testings are done to detect harmful auto-antibodies which may lead to chronic active autoimmune hepatitis (can cause liver cancer).
Might be a good idea, just in case.

Knees are 'knackered' by arthritis, which is not induced by cold.

There's lots of reasons not to ride in the cold in shorts, but ruining knees isn't one of them. As said, urban myth.

I said that two and a half years ago. Anyone who disagrees with me is a cretin.

Simple premise, muscles and joints work better when warm and dry. Why not cover up and keep nice and warm, makes the riding all the more pleasant. Of course, there are always "hard" men, and if that's what floats your boat.... Rolling Eyes

I'm still commuting in shorts as it's still very mild where I live. I suspect it will be longs when I get back from the World Masters week after next.
