Maybe you need to define a group ride, and also when exactly winter begins and ends otherwise the answer is no.

Or if a few friends want to ride without then fine if they are all happy with it. Definatly a yes though for rides where "guests" can ride too, ie most club runs.

Correct answer. I put on race blade type mud guards when its wet, to keep my backside dry. Glasses are a must to keep the *CENSORED* out your eyes.

not many riders could do 4 hours on wet roads on a cold day without guards, even if you did then you would risk getting ill

We should all ride winter bikes built out of gas-piping tubing, with mudguards and a 69" fixed. That should be the law.

Guards keep you dry after rain on wet roads for example, if you get wet and cold it will be much harder to stay out on longer runs.

I see this all the time when riders with no guards have to cut the run short coz they are wet and cold.

Really? Isn't that more to do with their being inadequately dressed? You may have a point when it comes to dry day/wet roads, but in the rain surely everyone gets equally wet.
The key to safe and comfortable winter riding is good-quality water-&-wind-proof clothing. Guards are no substitute for that.
