no question about his quality, you dont get points race WC medals and road race victories he heas won from nothing!!!!!!!

met him at a training wkend run by Cycling Ireland, very approachable, you wouldnt guess he s an elite athlete to meet him, no OTT rubbish!!!

had chat for 20mins on the bike with him and then he gave a really insightful lecture about training plans and how he plans and trains for various events.

charlie J gives the stamp of approval and would be a good reference on your CV, in my opinion.

he s obviously happy to be here in the UK and i like the direction he s taking with the young Recycling lads also!!!

He's too old now, but he would have made a great pro on the continent.

He had a season as an amateur in France for VC Annemasse & had 4 wins for them.

His website with all his numberous victories listed is http://www.chrisnewton.ndo.co.uk/

but, I weren't the one going around on this thread putting down the likes of Gibby et al.

Well, they are a professional team who spend most of their time racing amateurs. I think "Big fish small pond" is very apt.

RE Newton, I imagine that he probably realised a long time ago he wasn't going to make it to the big time i.e. to Bettini/Boonen level, so chose to stay at home rather than live out of a suitcase for 10 years. Id have done the same in his shoes.

Hmmmm...!!!! Interesting topic.
Discussions about ability?
Comments about character?

My view (and Grace's) :-
Superb athlete - one of the true elites.
Ability not in question look at his Palmares (domestic and International)
Excellent with young riders (although he can say it as he sees it at the end of a race - which can be straight to the point) and gives back the support he receives whenever he can.
Says he is sorry if he gets it wrong.
Gives praise and encouragement for good work.
Truthful and straight character.
Likes a laugh - and takes as good as he gives.
Very intelligent and mature.
Also - he has a lovely wife and he likes to live at home. Who can blame him I say.

Sounds like his end of term report. Very Happy

Maybe when faced with the option of "joining the continental pro peloton" he graciously declined!!
