After reading the Sinkewits story I'm not sure.
The other one which springs to mind, not cycling related, was the Scottish Skier, Baxter! remember him ? I felt sorry for him.

No - I dont think it would be seen as any more of a deterrent than a two year ban, especially once a rider hits 30.

A five year ban would do it. Unless very young and very determined, that's career ending for most people.

Mistakes sure - but deliberate cheating when they know the risks and wider implications to the sport afterwards? These fools deserve all they get. No sympathy here - ban them, including the self righteous self appointed brit anti-doping spokesperson.

As of now when a positive test is tantamount to random selection - no.

When testing is more widespread (there's only 8 a day on the Tour, we're told) and has a very good chance of catching the guilty - yes.

Thirded,

ban 'em - no more chances, they all know the rules by now.

Ignorance isn't an excuse.

So does anyone actually believe that life bans would eradicate dr ugs from cycling?

It would be a big deterent.

The loss of earnings / sponsorship for a top rider would be a factor. These athletes more often than not, don't have a second career to fall back on.

The ban would have to extend into team management, journalism and anything to do with cycling.

Draconian maybe, but in the past the dopers have been banned for a short period, written a book and made a bundle of cash and then returned to the sport.

Might persuade some sponsors to stay, some to invest, and would send out a strong message to other sports, IOC etc etc that at least we're not being soft and complacent

If you think a two year ban is something that a young rider can shrug off and take lightly, think again. Imagine being sacked today and knowing you cannot do the job you're good at and receive good money for, for another two years but instead have to schelp around in limbo for that period doiing something else.

That's reasonably heavy sh 1 t for most people.

In my view, a period ban and a fine is enough for the rider, but his team should also be punished with a fine and a deduction of ProTour/UCI points - or maybe exclusion from races for a period. I think that getting teams to police themselves (in addition to externally managed testing) is key.

I'd only support a life-time ban for cyclists if every other sport brought in the same punishment.

Nope, other sports have their heads in the sand and always will have.

Cycling should lead the way and regain some credibility.

Agree with the punishment of the team, but also a life ban for the doper.
