I think Valverde will be cooked. Bettini, past it and marked? Freire, if the Spanish can keep him in contention over the last hill, he's the man for the job.

Who has won 3? Van Looy I know - Binda & Merckx? If Friere takes his 4th it'll be a bit of a devaluation won't it? He's not the giant they were.

Always a chance one of the Schleck brothers may slip away on the climb and hold 'em all off. Much depends on:
a) who is in which pro team now.
b) which team will they ride for next season.
c) is the win bonus from the national federation attractive enough to sort out a and b above?
d) how many deals are done by the final selection in the last 50km.

True - but we've sort of covered this in Armstrong v Merckx arguments, in that it simply can't all be done these days.
