If I train hard for ages, form creeps forward by inches.

If I stop riding for a week, it plunges through the floor.

So I ride all year round, sort of. But I still don't get any better Sad

So, in answer to your question, dunno.

Royston

no structure to your training
bad diet
eating too late at night

speaking as a trained alcoholic, I'd say that there isn't enough wine in Royston's daily intake

Start with a gentle November and December - 10 hours per week if possible (3 or 4 rides), a few track seesions for fun with the odd 60 min turbo. Start to increase this during Jan, Feb and March with a more structured approach, but generally base miles. (like to get at least 120 hours base in over a 3 month period) plus more structured turbo and road rides. Start racing and training during April.

no structure: correct
bad diet: Very Happy I don't think so
eating too late at night: no effect, discredited idea.
too much vino:

TTs have slightly worse health outcomes than moderate drinkers; to increase one's risk to that of a TT one needs to drink the equivalent of a bottle of wine a day. Does me.

For all the deadpan reply, I know you're taking the mickey; the real reason I'm crap is that I haven't the willingness to do the work to be any good, and poor choice of parents means that even if I did have it I'd still be pretty average

Very Happy Dig as much as you like, Dave; I have many faults, but excessive pride isn't one of them. Anyway, if I'm doing something fundamentally wrong I want to know about it.

My objectived in cycling are to maintain health and fitness, have a bit of fun, maybe ride fast if I can.

Very Happy 8pm. Dinner soon. I'm hungry.

Just do what I do - ride 3 or 4 hours every day, usually more on the weekends. 7 days a week, 365 days a year - Xmas days, wedding aniversaries and on holidays abroad too. Ride big gears - unless you are riding fixed, and then you should do stupidly hilly rides anyway. Do this as a minimum and you will end as good as me.

Alternatively - you could get some proper advice from Legro and stop being such a knacker like me.
