so how is having your foot strapped into the pedal safer?

No cleat, strap not tight=easy removal of shoe.

I had clips and straps on my fixed gear commuter for a while. That's a proper Twisted Evil getting your foot back in again!

I use cycling shoes & leave a tatty pair of sandals in the bike park for walking into the office.

May seem a daft question, but I've never thought of it; is it possible to get shoes that take cleats (Speedplay, in my case) that you can also walk on?

You are not in Canary Wharf by any chance?

I'm RBS in Aldgate; there are several of us who leave shoes by the bike to avoid having to walk on cleats

Held behind 12 foot fence, razor wire on top, passkey in and out, out of sight. But until the security was installed, we of course lost bikes.

I used to do that, left my bike lock and a pair of flip flops (locked to the bike lock) in the shed.
