How about a cable tie with the end cut to the appropriate length?

Might work. It would have to be a thick, heavy duty cable tie but would that come in a short enough length for the ratchet to engage? I bet you'd find something that was intended for holding flexible tubes onto pipe spigots, on car engines for example, that would do the job. All it needs is to be solid enough to nudge the chain back into line.
