3 weeks after recovering from swine flu my rhr is still at 82 (it's normally 52). Riding into work, even gently, is kn a ckering me and i've missed several races already, looks like I will miss several more. I'm using my inhaler several times a day when prior to the virus I hadn't used it for 2 years.

What is the best way to recover fully from a virus please?

Thanks Smile

KJ's about right. Any decent virus will affect you deeply for at least 6 weeks. Do not expect to be anywhere near back to form until at least 6 weeks after you've cleared the main symptoms.

In fact, if you try before then, you could risk doing yourself even more long-term damage, such as getting post viral fatigue. Use it as an excuse to not MTFU for once! Razz

Um...listen to your heart, in this respect it is a fabulous barometer for your overall health.

Eat well, rest well, relax and enjoy what can not be seen as anything but perfect timing to get laid down by something like this.

When the heart rate is tickling the low 60's again, you can think about steady mileage... but like broken bones, it's all about allowing youself time to heal.

As some sage like words... its key to relax and give in to the sickness... don't fret about it, you will get better in time... just got to let nature take its course.

Having had flu 3 times in 3 years (yes I am off to the Doc for the flu jab this year) I am a serious expert in knowing how to get over this awful illness. Funnily enough the swine flu was the easiest one of the lot.

Legro helped me - basically the day that you feel better- don't ride. Wait till you get two days of feeling better then go out for a 10 minutes easy spin. Go home put the bike away and get some more rest. Keep making sure that each day you feel ok and up to riding.

Gradually build up your riding till you are back upto speed. Use you RHR as a barometer along with your general well being.

It is simples but when your racing and training and battering yerself you often turn off that sort of 'monitoring'.

Tis true.

Just chill out and forget racing.

You will perform poorly and this will do your head in even more.

I tried racing the Bill Jinks this year with a cold and suffered like a dog on this fairly easy circuit.I was glad when i got caught up behind the big crash and had to pull out!!!

Had a nasty bout of flu that laid me out for a week about 3 weeks ago. Only stopped coughing last week but starting training again this week, weights mainly.

Felt as weak as Des' legs on a Welsh mountain. Evil or Very Mad

It looked in your Halloween picture like you'd lost weight too. Sad

Don't overdo it Davey C. I had my first decent ride in today after getting back on way too soon. Had to take nearly a month of forced rest when if I'd done the sensible thing ... ah well now.
