2010 is set to be a classic season for both racing and sportive riding, according to Northern Rock Cyclone organiser Peter Harrison. Harrison believes that great teams, great riders, great racing and sportives and continued TV exposure will make 2010 the most exciting season for years. Harrison said: “We’ve seen the good times coming for cycling for a few years, and now they are here,”

He added: “With so many strong domestic teams this year the racing is going to be really intense,” he added. “It will be great.”

The high number of domestic teams means that team managers will have to be quick getting their entries in for top races like Harrison’s the Beaumont Trophy. “Field sizes are still quite limited,” he said, “so if they want to compete teams and privateers are going to have to get their places booked early.”

2010 is also set to be a great year for sportives. Entries for the Northern Rock Cyclone Challenge sportive, which takes place on 12 June, are way up on last year – and the field size is set to be extended. With refreshed routes for the 63 and 104 mile routes and a great 33 miles route it is set to be the biggest sportive in England again this year.

The Northern Rock Cyclone is a top weekend of cycling in Newcastle and Northumberland. The weekend kicks off on the evening of Friday 11 June with the thrilling wheel-to-wheel racing of the Leazes Criterium races in Newcastle’s Leazes Park.

The Northern Rock Cyclone Challenge takes place on Saturday 12 June and is the biggest sportive in England. With great feed stations, support, a photo of every rider available and a free certificate available for every rider, it is also one of the best supported.

The Northern Rock Cyclone weekend comes to a head on the Sunday with the Beaumont Trophy Premier Calendar race. Won in 2009 by Bradley Wiggins, the race takes in the beautiful countryside – and challenging riding – of the Northumberland countryside.
