BRITISH CYCLING BACKS SPORT RELIEF CELEBRITY BIKE RIDE

British Cycling has lent its support to the Sport Relief Million Pound Bike Ride by encouraging its 30,000 members and staff to donate via the Sport Relief website and providing insurance for the event. David Walliams, Jimmy Carr, Fearne Cotton, Miranda Hart, Patrick Kielty, Davina McCall and Russell Howard yesterday embarked on a 1,000 mile bike ride from John O’Groats to Lands End and will take it in turns to complete the gruelling 80 hour ride.

Jonny Clay, Sport and Membership Director at British Cycling, said: “The Sport Relief Million Pound Bike Ride is not only raising funds for a worthwhile cause, it has inspired some of this country’s best known celebrities to cycle and we believe this will inspire others to follow suit.”

“We have covered the cost of the insurance for the event to show our support for this great initiative and we are also encouraging British Cycling members and staff, most of whom, as regular cyclists will appreciate the physical challenge faced by the seven riders, to donate generously to the cause.”

The Sport Relief Million Bike Ride aims to raise £1 million by Thursday to help vulnerable people in the UK and in the world’s poorest countries. You can now sponsor the team by going to www.sportrelief.com.

British Cycling has also provided the seven celebrities with its Ride Membership, designed for commuters, sportive riders and fans of charity rides, benefiting them with legal support, liability insurance and discounts at selected bike retailers.
