Rollapaluza have completed their tour of UK regions in their search for the King of Spin and Queen of Cadence and last Friday the fastest competitors from the regional events descended upon the Half Moon in London to challenge each other for the National title and a share in the £500 cash prize pot put up by local bike shop Brixton Cycles. 70 riders took to the Rollapaluza rigs in front of a crowd of 250 screaming spectators who were whipped to a frenzy by TV's Anthony McCrossan. Amongst the racers vying for National glory were former world track champion and Olympic silver medallist Rob Hayles, guest Swiss Sprinter Fabian Keiser and professional surfer Gabe Davies. Fabian went on to set the fastest time of the night, however endurance rider Rob qualified in 32nd place with 24.10 seconds for the standard Rollapaluza distance of 500m.

Despite Fabian's time (set in the knockout rounds) it was clear early on that the lycra-clad track sprinters were not going to have everything their way especially when Dan Bowen representing Wales (dressed casually) took to the stage and set a time faster than all the assembled big boy trackies. Lee Povey, reigning European Masters Sprint champion looked stunned, then road rider Keith Henderson also beat the sprinters as did Hayden Wood representing Cambridge fixed gear club, Matt Rotherham, winner of the Manchester round, was the best of the sprinters in fourth place until at the very last minute Miles Stovold winner of the London Rollapaluza Winter League arrived just before qualification closed to jump to the top of the leader board with a 20.55.

The women's competition was equally hard fought with Londoners Estelle Rogers and Rachel Przbylski, so often used to sharing the Rollapaluza podium being pushed out of the qualification top spots by Manchester representatives Melissa Bury and Nadine Spearing who set two of the fastest ever female Rollapaluza times and were to go faster still as the evening progressed.

Miles, Hayden, Fabian and Keith battled through some amazingly tough and close racing to the semi-finals with Miles and Keith making the final and Fabian and Hayden racing for the minor placings. This race for third and fourth proved to be a very close race with the diminutive Hayden holding the gargantuan Swiss rider all the way to the line and finishing only 6/100ths of a second behind him for fourth place. However the men's final was closer still, the crowd were in a frenzy already but they went nuts when they witnessed Miles beat Keith to the £150 first prize and Nationals Jersey by only 1/100th of a second, nearly imperceptible on the dial hands but logged accurately by the Rollapaluza digital-timing system.

The Women's event followed the form book more closely setting up a Manchester versus London battle in the semis, but as their qualification times suggested the Manchester duo of Nadine and Melissa moved into the final leaving Londoners Rachel and Estelle racing for third place, where Estelle beat Rachel by 8/100ths of a second. Though Melissa was the fastest qualifier Nadine got faster throughout the evening (as she had in the Manchester round), the crowd were treated to yet another close race and fast too, both riders went under 23 seconds for the first time in the competition with Melissa just beating Nadine by 5/100ths of a second to take the Women's title.

The Rollapaluza National Series will return next winter and the team intend to visit even more towns and cities, they also have a few surprises lined up for the summer as well as taking part in events up and down the country and continuing their schools programme which saw 700 youngsters race Rollapaluza in the ten days preceding this event.
