Hotbed of cycling, the Isle of Man, welcomed the best of British, Dutch and Irish riders to Manx shores for the Sleepwell Hotels sponsored Isle of Man Youth Tour, a counting round of the National Junior Road Race Series and the National Youth Circuit Series. The event caters for junior riders with a series of road stages on the Island as well as three days of circuit races for Youth riders before overall winners for all the categories are crowned on the third day of competition. Wales’s stars of the future were all in action, both in the Junior and Youth categories. There were plenty of top 3 finishes throughout the weekend for the Welsh contingent and this would result in them filling plenty of top positions in the final overall standings.

Day 1
The event was kicked off with a Tour De France style opening Prologue Time Trial.
In the junior event Sam Harrison opened the Welsh account with a 4th place, only 2 seconds down on the fastest time. Owain Doull would finish in a respectable 8th place.

In the Youth A boys, William Worrall would finish the highest placed Welsh rider in 7th place.

The Youth A girls would see 3 Welsh riders finish in the top 4 positions demonstrating the strength of talent within Wales’s women’s cycling. Amy Roberts would finish the fastest Welsh rider in 2nd place with Elinor Barker and Amy Hill coming home in 3rd and 4th. All of the Welsh girls were separated by only 2 seconds.

Day 2
The second days racing for the juniors would take in 11 laps of the 9.33 kilometer circuit around Peel on the west coast of the Island
An early break by Joshua Edmundson on only the 4th lap would result in Sam Harrison bridging the gap alone with four laps remaining. The two managed to stay clear with Edmundson eventually sprinting to victory on the final ascent to the finish line at the top of the steep Switchback climb. Third place went to Simon Yates (British Cycling North West Region).

Harrison said he didn’t respond to Edmundson’s early attack straight away and decided to let the Motorpoint man hang in the wind for a while before he decided to cross the gap. "I went across when the race was splitting on the climb and managed to get to Josh" said Harrison. "We worked well and I was feeling good when we came to the climb for the last time. I was on his wheel but when he kicked, I just went backwards. It will be hard to get away on tomorrow’s stage as it’s nowhere near as tough as the Peel course, but I will probably give it a go."

Overnight leader Dan McLay, who had won Friday evening’s prologue, was not placed in the top 10. Edmundson will wear the yellow jersey for Sunday’s final stage in Ramsey on the east coast on the Sunday with Sam Harrison on his heals in second overall.

More than 160 youth riders took part in the Ellerslie circuit stage of the Sleepwell Hotels Isle of Man International Youth Tour on Saturday afternoon. The stage uses roads that would usually not be used for youth racing in the UK, so it presented a special opportunity for the riders to experience racing on the open road.

In the Youth A boys event Matt Cross and William Worral made the most of the climbing skills and managed to get themselves into 4th and 5th positions only a couple of seconds down on the stage winner.

The youth A girls once again looked to dominate the event but eventually lost out to stage winner Lucy Garner. Elinor Barker and Amy Roberts both made it into the leading group of 4 with Barker and Roberts eventually crossing the line in 2nd and 4th place with Amy Hill in 9th and Rebecca Hunt in 11th. Going into the final day’s stage the Welsh riders would look to over hall Garner for the overall victory.

Day 3
The final day’s stage would be a battle between the two main leaders, Edmundson and Harrison. The 92km final stage would see a lead group move away from the two rivals but the gap was not enough to threaten Edmondson’s and Harrisons overall positions.

Early in the final stage Sam Harrison (Planet X), who had started the day in second on GC and 12 seconds behind the leader, made a few big attacks in a bid to take overall victory. But each time Edmundson was able to close him down. At the finish of the Ramsey stage, Harrison finished in 9th with Edmundson in 10th. The result meant that Edmundson held onto his overall lead with Harrison claiming a strong second overall.

Harrison would also take second spot in the point’s competition.

Both riders will hot favorites for the National Junior Road Race Championships to be held in Brecon on the 19th May.

The final day of youth events would use the tight circuit around the Isle of Man’s National Sports Centre in Douglas. There were thrills and *CENSORED* throughout the day but the Welsh riders managed to avoid the carnage to once again fill the top positions.

The Youth A boys event race 1 saw Joe Anstice move himself nicely into a second place finish narrowly missing out in the final sprint.

Race 2 would see Matt Cross finish in 6th.

The final overall standings saw two Welsh riders finish within the top ten positions. Mathew Cross proving that his talents are not only on the track.

The Youth A girls were once again looking for the illusive stage win and it was the turn of young Rebecca Hunt to try and go for the win. Hunt was never far from the front of the race and in the final sprint she was narrowly beaten by 2nd place rider Melissa Bury to the line. Emily Haycox a Youth B rider also produced a stunning ride to finish in 6th ahead of Barker and Roberts.

The final overall standings would see all four Welsh riders finish within the top 10 overall.
