Looking do do some grasstrack racing in the near future.
Recently bought a Specialized Langster on the C2W scheme, and gradually getting used to fixed wheel riding.
Ratio is 42 x 16 (which I imagine is too low for grass track).

Looking for advice on gearing and tyres for grasstrack along with anything else you feel would help.

Many thanks

Jed

You'd be better off posting this in the Track section... There's all sorts of wierdos in there who'll be able to answer your questions.

Something in the range 75-78" depending on the "going" and your preference for large or smaller gears should be fine.

Run your tyres soft, around 40psi would be a good starting point and use tubs if you can get them, much much better on grass

From the other locked thread:-

Tyres - any cross tyre that you can fit in your frame - ideally a diamond pattern such as the Vittoria XN Pro ( http://www.vittoria.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=12325&Itemid=116 or http://www.vittoria.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=12322&Itemid=120 ) or Challenge Grifo XS ( http://www.challengetech.it/products/cyclocross/grifo-xs-009/en or http://www.challengetech.it/products/cyclocross/grifo-xs-open-020/en ). NB I've seen a price list which lists a 30mm Grifo but doesn't say so on their website! Have a chat with Rodders on here to see if he can get you some.

In the old days you could get much narrower cross tubs such as the Clement Grifo 61 or Barum G13s (of which I have a small stock !) which are 27/28 mm.

Gearing - mid to high 70's depending on track and conditions. I'm currently using 48 or 49 x 17 (76.2" and 77.8 ) but used to use 52 x 18 or 51 x 18. Have gone up to 84" on very fast tracks (Colchester - 800m Nat Champs final) and down as low as 71" (Ambleside in the wet!).

Thing to bear in mind with the Langster is the low bottom bracket height I believe.

Edit - links corrected

Can get a bit squidgy running them that low though!

You can use a 32mm on the rear of the Langster but you'll need a 28 for the front.(unless you get hold of a pair of winter forks for a deep drop brake and slip the forks into the frame)

or put ball bearings in the dropout above the wheel spindle to drop it down a bit. Usually bearings from a front hub will do (take some spares for when you drop them in the grass!!!).

would these be ok, or do clinchers tend to come off at low pressure
