9Bar, the nutritious and great tasting natural energy bar, has helped Olympic Silver medallist and former World Track Cycling Champion Craig MacLean keep himself fuelled during training and racing, despite suffering from Coeliac disease. Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disease, where the body's immune system attacks its own tissues. This immune reaction is triggered by gluten, a collective name for a type of protein found in the cereals wheat, rye and barley.
For professional athletes and people with active lifestyles, this can cause a significant problem when it comes to energy levels throughout the day and in training. “One of the problems I’ve had is trying to find high enough energy foods and healthy snacks,” explains MacLean. “Coeliacs can’t eat oats and most of the bars on the market are contaminated with wheat or use it as their main source of carbohydrates.”
He continues: “9Bar has been a bit of a revelation for me as it’s gluten free, wheat free, lactose free and has very high energy and is very healthy. It works really well, especially between training as you can eat it on the go and there are enough calories in it to sustain you through the longest training sessions.”
A team sprint *CENSORED*, MacLean is a double Olympian, winning a silver medal in Athens 2004. He has a host of World Championship medals, including a gold in 2002, and is also a Commonwealth Games gold medallist. MacLean is now focusing on working as a pilot for the tandem Paralympic cyclists.
Coeliac disease affects approximately 2 out of every 100 people in the UK. MacLean believes he has been suffering from the disease for at least 12 years, and has only recently been diagnosed in the past year. “If you suffer any symptoms from digesting wheat or breads or anything like that then it would be a great step to ask for a simple blood test from your doctor,” advises MacLean.
9Bar is an ideal product for people who suffer from food intolerances. 9Bar contains no artificial additives, and all 9Bars are Wheat free, Gluten free, Dairy free, Lactose free, Yeast free and Egg free.
Mark Gould, Managing Director of Wholebake Ltd, the company behind 9Bar says: “Although the majority of our customers use the product because it’s natural, healthy and convenient, it’s also great that our bars have use to people who suffer from various food intolerances.”
He continues: “It can be disheartening for people when they find that they can’t find things that are readily available for them to eat, Craig [MacLean] spent ages looking for a product that would help him during training but wouldn’t make him feel ill. But people can pop into any of the major supermarkets and pick up a 9Bar.

9Bar is available from all major supermarkets, as well as major and independent health food shops.
