A great ride, no doubt.
Made me think about other "records".
Different place, course, day, weather, only constant distance. Surely then, there is no such thing as a competition record, only a record for that particular course? As all roads are different, only chance of a "comp record" is on what is referred to as a "fast" (traffic and a downhill start) course. This can't be right, even if it has gone on for God knows how long. A bit like BAR averages, all nonsense, it's not distance over time, but an average of averages, which gives a false imoression of speed. How can that be valid.
Off we go!

A competition record is what it says it is, the fastest performance in a formal event at that distance. Doesn't mean it's the best ride or whatever, but in general unless it's the women's tandem trike record, there will have been enough rides done over the years to make it reasonably comparable with other rides with the best conditoins.

I did ride a 12 with a gift hill once, but I don't think that it made a great deal of difference...

The BAR (while basically a pointless crap competition in general because of its emphasis on those fluke conditions and dodgy courses, by virtue of being based on absolute speed) uses a perfectly coherent and sensible calculation system; total distance over total time would mean that the three events were not of equal importance.

And, 302 miles, respect.
