This information is a real eye opener isn't it! With only four road races in the whole of the BCF East Midlands Division this year, it shows how desperate things have become. Does the four listed include the Lincoln Grand Prix and the Melton-Oakham GP? |

...especially when you consider that the old East Mids Division and The Lincs Division are now together - its a big area. At this rate next year Division RR Champs will be 4 laps of Forest Town track.... |

No, does not include the Lincoln and Melton, they are registered directly at Manchester and not with the Region. _________________ Pete Lifford

Dearest Hans, As our club has only been reformed for two weeks - its early days and we haven't looked at promoting a road event yet - but I assure you it will be looked at! |

cool - would be nice to see the reformed Mansfield RC organise a BC road race, especially as the old Mansfield RC never did. Still, we all look forward to your event, after which you can bitch at will about the lack of other events _________________ World Masters Drive HillClimb For Taureans Category C Champion 2013.

Why are there so few?
Lack of organisers
lack of officials
Lack of marshalls
police not co operating
Cost of running the event
prizes too expensive
or apathy on the part of cyclists ..someone else will run it ? |

Several reasons:
1. With one or two exceptions, most roadmen now ride for a team rather than a club. Clubs then have no road racing members, so no incentive to put on a road race. (That's certainly true of our club - our road race trophy was won by an 11 year old, who's now left to join a sponsored team!)
2. The rise of the closed circuit event. 30 years ago, there was no Mallory or Darley Moor. You can put an event on at a circuit with a virtually unlimited field size, with a handful of helpers. To put a road race on the open road, you need about 30 helpers, depending on the circuit. Lots of small clubs don't even have 30 members.
3. There's no road race league in the East Mids, like there is in virtually every other division. If Surrey can have a good calendar of races, with the most congested roads in the country, then why can't the East Mids? We just need a Keith Butler to get the ball rolling.
4. TLI, Velo 99 and LVRC. What races there are on the open road in the East Mids, are largely promoted under these organisations rules. Why? Could it be that BC rules don't make it that easy to put races on for Vets only or for grass roots racing?

We have a great team in the form of Peter (Regional Competition Administrator) and Karen (Regional Events Officer) in the region who are working hard to increase the number of organisers and the number of events.
If anybody would like to organise and event, but may have never done so or not for a few years, please get in touch with Karen (vr username Daphne Brackett) or Peter (vr username plifford). |

I think that Will has hit the nail on the head in his post! The whole eastmids cycling community needs to act, otherwise the BCF will no longer have representation at the grass roots level of road racing. As the recognised governing body they need to show leadership.
