Hi Dave - hope you read this message. I've seen an old mate of yours - Mick Stevenson, several times this year in France. He is starting up the guest house for cyclists again in late spring. He was asking me if I still saw you and Chris Frost.
If Dave Gretton does not see this can someone give him a nudge please?
Cheers,

Sorry if I alarmed you tomcat - I'm in France at the mo and trying to contact Dave. Looked at you website and see that Chris is a member. Chris used to ride RR's with Mick Stevenson in the early 60's. I would welcome a pm from Dave and Chris. _________________ >V<

Well that NEARLY makes you a parrot..... You should ask your mate to get you a membership form and become 2nd claim! _________________ TomcaT

Just thinking - I should qualify for free 2nd clain membership with Sherwood CC. I did my courting at Sherwood Community Centre Club - married Maid Marian, ran my bussiness like Robin Hood and I look like Friar Tuck! Oh, and I keep 2 acorns in my pocket (used to be conkers) :o _________________ >V<

Back on subject - Dave has contacted me and it looks like some of the old Hucknall RC from the early 60's will be doing some riding in France together next summer. :D
Could be a great line out (lined out outside the bar) Gretton, Scott, Coging, Tayler, Stevenson and Frosty. _________________ >V<

May a middle-aged, but young at heart, cycling administrator from Ireland post on here, having been born and bread in Nottingham?
It occurs to me that we had some cycling scene in Nottingham back in the early sixties.
Stars were too numerous to mention but my brother, Ian, and I were inspired by watching Lloyd Binch at Harvey Hadden. The city continued it's time trialling traditions of the Nottingham Wheelers team of the fifties and the incomparable Ray Booty with the likes of Mick Brown and my namesake, Ron Hallam. On the road there were real stars like the late John Aslin and Pete Wells from my club, Beeston Road Club.
A long time ago but great fun and inter-club rivalry. I know other cities would boast such legacies but Nottingham was really a hotbed for the sport |

Stuart - did you ride the HH in the early 60's and were you one of Norman Sheils proteges? If so - I think it might have been you who i rode off the track and had the wrath of Sheil decend on me :) _________________ >V<

Although I rode the tracks in the sixties, it was my brother, Ian Hallam, who was Norman's protege. We still talk regularly to Norman in Canada.
By the mid to late sixties I had made a name for myself as a rugby player with Nottingham RFC and later Leicester and it took some pretty hefty guys to move me on the pitch! If you moved me off the track at Herne Hill then congratulations and, as they say these days, reeeeeespect!!!
I was some 3 1/2 stones heavier than our kid and, sadly, that gap is even wider these days. He is actually lighter now than his youthful racing weight and is racing fit as we write, even though Pam would kill him if he ever pinned a number on his back again! |
