I am all in favour of different types of cycling being involved at the Olympics however reading the messages recently, I feel that the choice of the UCI is a bit strange
I would have probably scrapped the mens scratch race as they have played around with the rules for the last few years.
The other maybe the womens points race.

Julie,I may be wrong, but I dont think the scratch race is an Olympic event. I dont think the road T.T's would be missed, they interfere with the Pro's day job. |

Julie I think you need to put more events on there to make it a valid poll |

I think the Woman are more hard done by, they don't have team pursuit, team sprint or madison, thats 3 events less than the men and still the UCI take away the womens 500mts TT. Not fair _________________ www.mastercoach.co.uk

Why scrap any of them, it's not as if the events that are being used to replace them in other disciplines are going to take up the use of the track.
Perhaps the UCI don't like the domination of some countries and want to try and spread the medals around a few more countries. |

Personally I would dump the team pursuit... Don't know what else though.
The reasoning behind losing events is that the olympics were spiralling out of control in terms of size/participants/cost. So after Atlanta a sort of a one in one out system was introduced. Basically I believe you are allocated a certain number of athletes/medals and if you want to introduce an event, you need to remove one to free up the medal (I think that's how it works). Also within this I believe that to encourage womens participation in sport around the globe, dropping womens events is a bit of a no no unless they are replaced by another womens event. So I suppose what I am saying is that to expand the womens programme you would have to correspondingly reduce the chaps. Whereas it used to be the olympic types who made the decisions, this has now been passed on to the governing body, the UCI. What I find a bit disturbing is the number of people having a go at BMX racing, largely it seems on the basis of ignorance as to what is involved. Sorry, I'm rambling..... |

Nobody is having a go at BMX.
They claim it must be easy for TV viewers to understand the events, well nothing could be simpler than the kilo or 500 metrs TT,no heats, no repechages, no points scored, no laps just flat out efforts.
At the moment they are looking at kicking out another sport altogether to make way for either Golf or Rugby Sevens.
Why dont they get rid of Tennis and Football which dont need any more coverage and we'll keep the track TT's/ BMX et al and how about MTB downhill? |

Sorry, should have been clear, wasn't necessarily referring to this forum, but on other forums people have been less than complimentary about BMX as a sport. |

Why scrap a cycling event when you could scrap events like swimming (and even diving) that have so many (not entirely sure how many) medals to contest. _________________ Seizing the day since 1988. |

Why not scrap football? All that time and effort for one gold medal. _________________ mug source code table remote plate magazine gel |

What I don't understand is, if you feel you have to scrap something why do it when riders, coaches, sponsors have alreday started working towards 2008. Ok I know 3 years is a long time but if you're chasing an Olympic Gold I bet it don't feel so long.
Why not 2012? If something has to go. |

Scrap the road ITT's having said that they have more right to be there than BMX. Whats next the pursuit for BMX Vert then get rid of the Sprint for Street or the dirt jumping. |
