I'm considering the purchase of a x-country hardtail MTB in the not-too-distant future, and have noticed that although disc brakes are fairly common on most mid-range MTBs, at the top end of the market there seems to be a split between disc brakes and V-brakes. I assume that this is because discs are heavier than Vs and the market hasn't sorted out what's better. Opinions?
From a maintenance point of view, I'm fairly comfortable with taking v-brakes to bits, but how easy is it with disc brakes? And mechanical or hydraulic? |

discs from every aspect unless you are a gram counting freak.
they are easy to take to bits if you have the right tool to do it with, they are more of a faff to initially set up and they sometimes make funny noises to start with but once they are sorted there is no competition. |

I would always normally say v's, but this year the sponsor shoved some discs on the bike and after getting on a v'd up bike the other day, I am now sold on the old discs.
Has to be said I am using Hayes discs which are generally unversally hated, and feel different to every other disc I have ever used, so there maybe more to this debate yet! |

Never used discs, although hear them a lot rubbing and squeaking on mtbs (especially when they are out of the saddle), when racing.
v's on my mtb
mafac cantilevers, circa 1979, on x bike |

Yes, the weight difference allowing for different STI's, whels, rotors and cables. |
