We've covered this 'saying' only a few days ago - It means Campag doesn't work until it wears out - Shimano works brilliantly from new & lasts for ages... So - would you buy something that doesn't work correctly until you've nearly worn it out?

No. It means Shimano's durability is questionable, and Campag's peak "silky smooth" performance is after a ride or two. |
Looks like you have a different opinion on what 'silky smooth' is to a lot of people! I think (know!) even a lot of Campag users wouldn't claim that! And as for questionable durability, I have previously mentioned my D-A equipment is still working perfectly after almost 8 years, with the only thing to have needed replacement was the brake blocks - after 6 years of use including a yearly trip to the mountains of France. Sounds pretty durable to me. 
I'm afraid that I cannot ever go back to Campag after I was completely misled by everyone who claimed it was the only componentry to have, and I wasn't exactly impressed with how badly it worked. After switching, slowly over a number of years, to eventually Shimano, and particularly Dura-Ace, where everything was soooo much better, I have lost all confidence on Campag's credibility. I do on occasions try out mates bikes that are Campag equipped, just to see if my fears are unfounded, and I'm always surprised that they still cannot get it right, and the fact that people are so vehemently opposed to using anything else but is completely beyond my comprehension. Mine is not an uninformed opinion, but a tested understanding of the pros & cons of both systems, and the most important aspect, how well it works, and ease it does the job. Aesthetics doesn't come into it (otherwise I would use Record as I like the carbon bits to match my frame). Obviously I have answered the unfounded durability issue.
Those who are pro Campag, and those who are not will never see eye to eye on this subject, and always reminds me of the helmet debate, and D/C v S/C debate in time trials. So for the time being I will try to stay out of this discussion, unless I can bring some more information to it! |

Paul, your replies are tediously long, although what you've said above makes sense. I think one bad experience colours our views for life (like my Shimano index levers falling to bits years ago).

People who like nice things buy Campagnolo, people who will put up with sh*te buy Shi*mano. Simple fact of life really.
Bikies had to wait 100 years to get aero brake levers, then Shi*mano re-invent non aero sti levers, what's that about? Never seen anything as daft, take a giant leap forward, then two steps back!
