Out of the saddle this morning going up Springfield Road (in Chelmsford) when my crank broke. Down I go and hit the deck with a big gash in my leg where the end of the crank cut it (you can still see some flesh and hairs on it )
Carted off to A&E where they stitched it (9 stitches) and dressed the grazes and just got home, courtesy of a club mate who works in Chelmsford (cheers Rich). _________________ Bally: Putting the @rse into Grass.

Old Campag Nuovo Record Pista.
Was used for grass track only for many years but have been commuting on it on and off this last year. _________________ Bally: Putting the @rse into Grass.

Much older than that !
Was only reserved for racing though and wasn't used at all for 10 years or so.
It looked in very good condition. _________________ Bally: Putting the @rse into Grass.

Same thing happened to me some years ago, again Campag -- so old it had a 44 minimum.
I change cranksets every so often now. _________________ "For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong." H. L. Mencken

It's probably the 11th crank I've broken now _________________ Bally: Putting the @rse into Grass.

Cheers.
Most bandages are off, just one on my hand and a dressing over the stitches left.
New chainset ordered! (Miche Advance). Also ordered a new one for my geared bike (Shimano 105) as that one's probably 6 years old now and had a lot of use. _________________ Bally: Putting the @rse into Grass.

sounds like one of 2 reasons;
1 - you are fatter than Rich Hill
2 - too tight to buy new equipment. I mean, a Nuovo record crank. I've got 2 Record-C cranksets in me garage. Love the look of them, but way too scared to used them _________________ wishing my bike fitted as badly as Rich Hill's ... |

No one's fatter than Rich Hill - not even me
The cranks I've broken have been of varying ages, from a couple of years old upwards with varying amounts of use.
But perhaps your're right - I do need to change them more regularly (see above) but you have something lying around and think that will do! _________________ Bally: Putting the @rse into Grass.

Odge has old 'bingo' mags from 1980 lying around, but he knows their structural integrity may have changed since manufacture ... _________________ wishing my bike fitted as badly as Rich Hill's ... |

Guess what
The chainset I bought to replace the one I broke a year ago broke tonight
The crank (Miche Advance) snapped across the pedal spindle sending me to the deck on my @rse
Right buttock's really sore and stiff and I've got the LVRC Track Champs this weekend.
Only bright side - White Van Man stopped to see if I was alright and gave me a lift home. _________________ Bally: Putting the @rse into Grass.

I think I have broken five cranks over the last 24 years, three being Stronglight 49D and two being TA, all being on the commuting bike(s) on which I use older kit. Strangely enough two of these failures were on the same hill as where I snapped my old RRA frame in 2007 (going past Wood Green bus garage) . Thankfully on each occasion I stayed upright. _________________ John McClelland's victory in the motor paced event with Derek Marloe on the derny was a thing of beauty (Oldmanof) |

I've never broken a crank, and mine are all made of glass. _________________ "Well done, you are 100% absolutely without a shadow of a doubt spot-bollock-on correct." - Tucker

Perhaps the mileage is too little to cause much stress _________________ John McClelland's victory in the motor paced event with Derek Marloe on the derny was a thing of beauty (Oldmanof) |

I've got an old TA set you can borrow then. Everyone needs to experience a broken crank before they become real cyclists _________________ John McClelland's victory in the motor paced event with Derek Marloe on the derny was a thing of beauty (Oldmanof) |
