SPOCO = Sporting Courses Competition.
Invented by Bill Norris of the Maldon and District CC after his son was killed on a 'dragstrip'. He wanted a competition based on placings rather than times to avoid using the main roads.
Originally in the London East area but since expanded nationwide on a regional basis. _________________ Bally: Putting the @rse into Grass.

I've organised the Magic Dragon the South Wales version for the last 3 years. At one point the most popular in the country according to cycling weakly. Sadly its a little on the decline this year.
We also have a new SPOCO organised by the Bynea. |

The old chestnut, "fast" course versus proper race. It's surely where you place in the field, rather than times, and the whole basis needs to be looked at. It's IMPOSSIBLE to compare "times" even on the same course because the conditions can be different. To qualify for anything by a stupid fast time when you are still 60th in a 120 field means nothing really, except being able to say "I can do xxxxmins for xxmiles", which has always struck me as an utterly pointless fact.
So, is a 56 minute "25" but placed 10th better than a 53 minute ride and placed 33rd?
No contest really, is there, and once entry is determined on performance (maybe in certain events to get into a national) then we can just forget all about silly "dragstrips" and times that don't accurately reflect anything except a course with a "gift hill" or a steady flow of big trucks to create suction, or a strange weather pattern.
If that could be sorted out there would be no need for "standard distance" either. I've always thought the whole "times" basis of the peculiar sport of TT is odd, terribly daft and British. _________________ Mexican underwater chili eating champion 1957

Given the time you've been thinking about this, I was hoping for better. |
