The winner is always in the winning break, how do they know this?

The winning break is usually the last one to leave the bunch

Northerner: One who resides - or has heritage - north of the Tyne. Pure breed.

South Yorks: All related, thick as $hit and got stuck in the ugly machine and was beaten with the next persons ugly stick too.

Birmingham!!!

Dont let any real northerners hear that again or we are likely to come down there and punch your southern face loose. Then nick your car and do your missus.

Road race tactics are simple: Get in the break and win the gallop!

Or, in Vets crits at Eastway: Get on Dominic's wheel then come past him in the last 100 yards.

Simple, yes; easy, no.

My practical tactics are very different: turn up; look for the biggest bloke; sit on his wheel; pack early to get fresh tea with no queue. Simple, easy, doable.

I am really surprised that the last option hasn't got a vote from any of the testers on here. Perhaps it's because I didn't put the long version which is: Sit on the front, pulling all the breaks back and moan because road racing is boring, no one will work with me in the break, when I attacked (means up the speed 0.5 mph for 200 yards) everyone sat on me and then they all sprinted past me at the end.

I'm sure all you northeners are very nice, what with all the rough edges rounded off by the appalling weather anywhere from the midlands upward.
that's fine by me, you have all the "hard" men, we get all the sunshine. Suits me being soft, then. Just don't go out on Friday/Saturday night in Portsmouth or Southampton and start calling southeners soft....
Anyway northeners coming south have done a wise thing, but it's getting full now with immigrants from all directions!
What really gets me is anyone from another part of the country who drones on and on about how wonderful their home area is, whilst enjoying the benefits of being in the deep south. If you like it so much, shut up and p1ss off back there (and flog me your house cheap to help build up mmy property empire)!

From my experience at the Betty Pharoah memorial at the weekend, I would suggest the tactic that work best is to quickly establish who wants to do the racing, sit on them mercilously, then when they get bored of continuously being chased down or chasing down breaks, slip off up the road in the softest of soft rubbishy moves.

It also helps if you shout severe abuse at those active in the race if they ever fail to pull back a move you are not in, preferably in a welsh accent....

As my old coach, Bobby Clamp suggested - go from the gun, go with every break, sprint for every prime, attack out of every corner and save a bit for the sprint. Oh, and if you asked him for a top tip, he'd say 'always pedal forwards'.
