Too many variables... depends on the type of race, the course, the opposition, your form...
My favourite tactic involves a bit of heckling.

If it a 3/4 cat race sit in, chase down every break and as soon as you catch them sit up. Make sure you are at the front for the sprint, but don't bother sprinting and generally get in the way of everybody else.
Is this how you it should be done??

if the winner is not in the break then its not the winning break.
