Here's another dark horse... Nico Eeckhout... he's getting the results in at the minute.

Plenty of light riders have won Flanders recently: Bartoli, Bugno, Sorenson. Is Bettini riding? Must have a chance, if he is. Unless a Belgian outranks him in the Quickstep pecking order.

er if by recently you mean almost 7/8 years ago?
By memory it was Bugno in '94 (garish Polti kit)
Bartoli in '96 (MG-GB)
Sorenson in er, 98 ?

yep bettini is riding, just read his diary on cycling news where's he's fired up for the 'Ronde'

3 lightweights in the last 10 years is a significant proportion. Besides, Museeuw, Van Petegem, Tchmil are hardly bunters, either. Much closer to 70 than 80kgs.

Boonen will win... Cool

I think he is the most talented Classics rider at the moment.

Good luck to Rog and Jez though.

Surprised out how Bettini lead him out in MSR though - he just sort of moved across and Petacchi et al seemed a bit surprised by it all to be honest

Results off cyclingnews today in the 13km TT

1 Viatcheslav Ekimov (Rus) Discovery Channel 16.48
2 Bert Roesems (Bel) Davitamon-Lotto
3 Nico Mattan (Bel) Davitamon-Lotto 0.07
4 Magnus Backstedt (Swe) Liquigas-Bianchi
5 Stijn Devolder (Bel) Discovery Channel 0.09
6 Leif Hoste (Bel) Discovery Channel 0.11
7 Marc Wauters (Bel) Rabobank 0.13

So that's Ekimov who's ALWAYS a good dependable bet in RVV and P-R and Leif Hoste (3rd in RVV last year) and Stijn all in good form as well as Backstedt for next weekend in P-R....
Wasn't there someone who suggested Wauters as an outside bet?

Tom Boonens the favourite for me out of that lot.

I have placed a couple euros on Flecha at 20/1 and Tom Steels who is in decent form at 45/1 as well.

Surprised to see that Jeremy Hunt isn't riding. Mr Bookmaker look to have filled the team with belgians. This is disappointing. Jez has been in the results of late.

Jez was a DNF in de Panne. Does anyone know why?

Yep Billy Boy, my money's on Eeckhout - too many favorites will be watching each other like hawks and I don't think Eeckhout was ever in to track racing when he was an espoir. Wink

No idea, but this might explain his absence. His team manager talked about him being one of their key riders for the belgian races. Not heard that he crashed, so maybe he's picked up a virus.

Stijn Devolder will be up front with Hincapie when big George cracks, go on to win, and then leave Discovery.

you know, I was tempted to put in a Robberbank rider but for all their strength in depth and their ability to win virtuall every other Classic out there, when was the last time a Rabobank/WordPerfect/Novell rider won Flanders? They never seem to get it right in this event.
(cue Tony Bell hat eating scenario Sunday night Rolling Eyes )

Sorensen in 98'! Wink

Hammond... he's on form, knows the roads and is psyched up for next week... He'll be up there. Eurosport is getting more and more appealing with a Brit being there for the classics...
