IT would depend on how good you are, what events you ride and how many events... It's not a north/south thing in any way. there appears to be 100's of events in Surrey, or at Hillingdon, so more points are given out. But that doesn't mean it's easier, far from it.

The Surrey League should be good, but isn't, as most riders just use the series as a day out training with a lead car and a few blokes waving flags to keep them safe. Bunch of posers. The only rider that was any good was Neil Hoban, and when he cleared off the rest of them started eating and drinking and posing while Mummy and Daddy took photos. A day in the Pennines for them would put a few bikes on the second hand market. |
Have you allways been a ****, or is it just when you talk about bike racing. |
How many Surrey leagues have you won Pierre ??? |
I couldn't ride them as I got banned for life for supplying Prozac to the Surrey Leaguers. They used it as a stumulant. |

I'm sure lots of riders would disagree Tony.
All you northeners should get back to your sweatshop or pit and just leave us to get on with running the country. _________________ training! what training ,just race yourself fit |

You all seem to be missing the point here. It is definately easier to get points in the South as more are given out in the races. Eg in a 34JW race all cats get their points seperately eg a 4th cat who finishes, say 9th but is 1st 4th cat will get the points for a win. In the North the only points awarded are for the overall race position. |

What a load of bollacks. Now you need another computer stuck on your bars to tell you how many points you might have depending where you live. Schoolie road racing should be 30 miles, Junior 16-18 should be 50 miles, and after that it will sort itself out. The next thing is that anyone who turns up will get a little cup. Look, if you're not doing 200 miles a week then you're a banker. Never mind all that sh about work, I did it, studied for a degree, got it and pd off to France. So did a lot of others bang all the miles in. Bone idle lot you are. |

Ok, the health service has more doctors and nurses, better buildings, shorter waiting lists etc... The schools have new buildings for the first time in 20 years, more teachers etc... and the war against Saddam was ok except it was supporting Bush (Bosnia, Sierra Leone and so on were ok cos they worked out...)
But that don't disguise the fact that the races in the north are tougher than races in the south...
The fields are tougher... the courses are tougher... the temperature is tougher and... the prize lists are probably smaller... |

All said through rose tinted specs, no doubt!
And most of it complete and utter rubbish too!

The gradients on the courses give some idea of what the riders face (though the facts on the wind strength will probably favour the South East)
An analysis of the GB teams over the last century, half century, quarter century... etc will show a predominance of road riders from the north... a few names like Brittain (two podiums in the peace race), West, Simpson, Hoban, Robinson, Sherwen, Herety, Jones, Elliott, Boardman... the only southerner to figure in a big race I can instantly think of is Sean Yates...
I can't get the prize lists online that I wanted... |

Ok... suggesting that prominence of the provincial origin of the riders may imply that they are from a tougher stock... looking at the list of British National Champions (which will include scots like Ian Steel and Rob Millar)... still gives a predominance of Northerners... especially as riders like colin Lewis (from the SE would probably not be readily identified as a Southerner)...
Beyond that, there have been two OUTSTANDING women riders that the UK has produced... Nicole Cooke (Wales) and Beryl Burton (Yorkshire... aka the North). Alongside this there have been world champs like Mandy Jones (Rochdale - North) and Bernadette Swinnerton (Midlands/nearly north) did get a silver in the worlds' road...
As there are more champions from the North... this either implies that the standard of racing is higher or there is a genetic mutation that brings up the odd northern odd bod who is good... I suggest the former.. |
