If someone made allen keys that are as torue resistant as a campag spanner, I'd consider using allen bolts.
as it is, I'm too concerned about bending my brother's allen keys, and having my head bitten off.
also, Record LF track hubs won't take allen bolts. |

The whole point of allen-bolts is that they are designed to be over-torque resistant IIRC _________________ Straight Outta Compton |

if you stick to a campag spanner track nuts are basically impossible to overtighten. it's only when you go to longer spanners you become able to trash nuts. And only if you go away from the hex socket (as per campag spanner) that you have any risk of rounding the nuts. 15mm nuts are however very easy to find a compatible spanner for in times of need (e.g. out training) |

Track Nuts everytime, even the club disc got modified to take track nuts. allen key bolts are ok on the front, but a pain if you are doing race service, it's an extra tool required. _________________ When offered the choice between the path of Desire and the path of Virtue I chose the path marked Diversion.

Never had a problem with Zipp alan key fixings as the cups have a large diameter to stop them twisting in the frame. Would prefer nuts though!
I replace the alan key screws if they start to become rounded - cost about 20p each rather than £10 each for Campag nuts!!!
If you keep the threads and under the screw head lightly lubricated with copper-ease or similar then you don't need as much torque (which damages heads and keys!), to achieve the required clamping force - It also stops that awful 'graunching' noise _________________ "Nice bike, How fast does it go?" |

But campag nuts + campag spanner = no rounding |

It's the muppets that use pedal spanners and open ended spanners that cause nut rounding. _________________ When offered the choice between the path of Desire and the path of Virtue I chose the path marked Diversion.

Are Campag track nuts a standard size? I presume they must be - in which case a standard socket would do the job? With no danger of rounding?
Just interest, I don't own a track bike... _________________ "For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong." H. L. Mencken

campag track nuts are 15mm.
would you want to have to lug around the weight of a socket set in your bag? |

Just asking.
I'm such a ham-handed mechanic that I would always use a socket rather than a spanner, since with a socket even I can't get it wrong. But with modern road bikes, praise the Lord, one can do almost everything with 3 or 4 Allen keys. _________________ "For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong." H. one of the downside with sockets, comparwed to a campag spanner if the off set of the handle. part of the reason campag spanners wont round nuts is because the handle is closely aligned, laterally, with the nut. Most sockets however off set the handle by at least the depth of the socket, sometimes more, meaning the handle force is an inch or more *CENSORED* from the nut. This *CENSORED* leads the socket to begin trying to twist on the nut and begins the rounding process, the twist will increase with either narrower nuts, rounded nuts, or extra tight nuts. The differences are slight and i happily use whatevers to hand but at a push I'd say you're least likely to round a track nut by using a campag spanner. |
