Would you enter a race if there was no prize fund?
How important is a few quid?
After a question below lets say £10 - £12 entry fee.
or £9 for a 10 lap crit!

you might want to rephrase the question, so one answer isn't a double negative ...

Depends. I have entered dozens of senior races as a junior with the objective of getting a constructive kicking from elite riders as the benefits of such a kicking would outweigh winning a tenner or a cloth cap. Come to think of it, is there any cash prize at the nationals nowadays? |

Only if Bill has remembered to tell anyone on the start line!
Did you get yours the other week? |

It could be,
But is was more aimed at Troy saying on another thread the race they are putting on wouldn't have much in the way of prizes without a full field!

I thought he paid more than that in bribes to the two WW's in the break to let him have the win! |

In any race of 50 there's probably 40 who know they have no chance and are there for fun/training/whatever.
And in any case with £3,000 bikes and the travel to the event costing more than 1st prize it's a no-brainer anyway. _________________ "For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong." H. L. Mencken

Exactly. I got a few quid for winning a race a few weeks ago, but it's not really the important bit. The result sheet with a personal message from the organiser means much more as a prize because it's something I can hang onto to remind me of the day. I won't have much change from buying a chain from my financial winnings, so if cycling was about making money most of us would have abandonned it quite a while ago! Perhaps I would have preferred the money had been spent on a few publicity posters so that more people had been there to see my brief moment of glory.
Of course, I'm talking about chipper level not domestic pro or anything. |

Minimum £2000 prize list regulation for premier events. Easy amount of money to find on top of road closure payment and police costs etc. _________________ 'What's up with her? Does that mean I can at last get rid of the wine stored in my garage which I bought on a booze cruize to Calais for a proposed BC West Thames race with wine and beer prizes? Upon my return I found Ian Chatfield turned the idea down and paid out cash prizes, albeit modest.
So I have been forced into trying to drink all the wine and beer - hic. The sacrifices we organisers make. |

Why does hardly anyone give out trophies anymore? A small cup engraved with the event is worth much more than its cost to buy. Better still a big one you can keep for a year with all the past winners names on.
Have you ever been round to a mates house who's got a shelf full of magnificent trophies for something crap like darts or pool? Why don't we have them?
Do they still give out the trophy for the Bob Swailes RR? Those were the days..... _________________ Kelly was good, but he never won on Scale Hall |

Agreed, although getting a prize for winning a serious event is always a nice bonus. _________________ John McClelland's victory in the motor paced event with Derek Marloe on the derny was a thing of beauty (Oldmanof) |

Not true, as I won your McMullan Shield last year and got it on the day! Where is my dinner ticket? _________________ John McClelland's victory in the motor paced event with Derek Marloe on the derny was a thing of beauty (Oldmanof) |
