Sounds like a decent turnout for the first one.

Yes good, and they can all pat themelves on the back for the smooth thro n off.

We plan to keep it on the short route until May and the lighter nights, then we'll be turning at Oxton to head up to Northgate Island and then back along the Ollerton Road. It was pretty dark as I was getting back to Carlton, so put some lights on for your journey home.

That's a relief, didn't want to be the only one that suffered last night. Smile

Yes but it all blew apart on Oxton Bank. Too fast for me.

Good. There is some seriously strong and talented guys out on it, including 3 Ex pros, a former national pursuit champion, one of the current highest ranking points scoring rider, a World Duathlon champion Very Happy , two national 4up team trial winners (plus one who's nearly won it but wasn't there tonight), some very, very good youngsters, a very good track rider and a mediocre former local time triallist.

Possible route change next week after the Bank Holiday will post it up later.

The descent off of Oxton Bank and going through Southwell wants looking at being removed. Just an idea but the A616 out to Ollerton and retrace back?

The A616 is a great road for training, the problem with it will be that because it's reasonably hilly they'll be people being dropped, not coming through and only about 3 left by Ollerton.

The route we are looking at will continue through Upton and then right as we get into Southwell at the BP garage to head up to Farnsfield, then left before heading to the White Post Island to join the Ollerton Road in the dip before North Gate. To return to Lowdham for anyone who has parked their cars there.

This eliminates Southwell High Street, plus Oxton Bank both up and down.

Most people I have spoken to, say Oxton Bank is the issue, not because it's anyway challenging on it's own, purely because it's become a bit of a 'free for all' for some people to show how strong they are. Lets be honest it's lovely 'through and off' to Averham and then up get to the first rises back to Southwell and the watts go sky high.

It's a diificult balance as it needs to be hard enough for the Elite riders but if they start tearing it up between them, the weaker riders;
a) stop coming through,
b) possibly get dropped and
c) then loose interest and stop coming.

In Chaingang Utopia we'd all be riding at threshold on lovely smooth sweeping roads, with no traffic, no road furniture, with no one going through red lights and going round bends on the wrong side of the road. For this to happen we'd have to go back some years and you'd have Don Lilley shouting at you. As stated before, the route, time and meeting point is a compromise for everyone. What has been good is that it's a midweek meeting point, at the same time and place each week, which gives the local riders an option knowing there will be people to train with if that's what they fancy doing.

Only problem with that route is lots of parked cars on the Kirklington Road out of Southwell and again lots of parked cars in Farnsfield.

mmm.. rode it this morning and have to agree with you. Shame really because the left turn straight after Farnsfield on to the Blidworth Road would probably be the best bit of road of the whole circuit. Plus the right turn into Halam would be too much of a risk.

How about occasionally doing the route we are using now but the otherway? Might have to regroup at the top Oxton but otherwise it would be alot flatter second half.

That sounds good, although I've only kept up till southwell up to now, so my comment is not that relevant. Plus I can't get to any in May due to work.

Being dropped halfway isn't a problem. It's shown me how hard I need to train, and is cheaper and more convenient than entering a Road Race Very Happy

It's going to be wet tonight.

Please be careful, I don't want to use my First Aid training!
