Now then, thought I'd keep this local.
I've been hanging on to the slow(er) Breaston chaingang for a few weeks and I'm fitter than I've ever been, which still isn't great, but anyway I thought I'd have a bash at racing.
Lurking on here though I've read some scathing comments about incompetent beginners so where do I start?

Should I just turn up at Mallory and get stuck in or has anybody got any better ideas?

I guess I'm just looking to suckle at the bosom of veloriders knowledge.

Ta very much.

Julian

It depends what you are after from racing, sadly the viccy park crits are over for another year, as I think that has got to be the best place to start.
Mallory can be quite hard, and I have yet to finish one, this does not do your confidence much good I can assure you. But I have been told (and observed) that this is not unusual so do not let this put you off.
That said Mallory or he forthcoming american adventure are as good a place as any to start.
Take it easy, just try and take it all in, theres a lot more to it than keeping up, but most of all enjoy it.
Everyone has to start somewhere and the longer you put it off the harder it gets. (expects finbarr fnarr fnarr Rolling Eyes )

Have a go at Mallory.

Come down on a Tuesday and ride with the 3rd + 4th cats. If you get dropped you can carry on riding around, hopefully join up with another group. As long as you don't get in the way you won't get pulled out.

What is the faster Breaston bash - is that just the Willington loop ? Don't be put off road events thinking circuits are easier - they aren't - though if you get dropped it's not quite so disheartening.

Hmm
But apparently you're all loonies!?
Think I might struggle, one of the fast chaps tagged along last week and was cruising along into a headwind sat on the tops, while I was behind on the drops crying.

Ps where did everybody go last night?

Not raced at Mallory but was in a very similar position a few years ago...I went to Goodwood, was made very welcome and started with everyone on a scratch night, I figured I'd be dropped and at the end of the first lap zoom off went everyone and left me for dead.
Keep plugging, someone will join with you sooner or later, just ride together and wait for the pack to come round. Pull to the side and then give it all you've got and see if you can get up to the speed and tag on the back again.
And keep at it.
next week see if you can stay in longer and nearer the middle and keep going.
Don't worry about results or performance...everyone starts somewhere and everyone has been dropped at one time or another.
Good luck

I'd suggest a trip to Darley Moor next time there is an event on.

A good relatively safe circuit and the racing tends to be tame enough and not too technical so ideal for beginners - that said it's a bit bleak up there!

As far as other advice is concerned - just get stuck in, take care of your own front wheel and everyone else can take care of theirs. It's easier and generally safer towards the front than at the back, and get your speed and line right into the corners and you'll get out of them much quicker and with less effort.

That is all

Try some longer turns at the front of the gang first, Please note ..... in a race they don't usually slow after the top of the climbs for everyone to get back on again.

I'm with you StevieB, I think I'm getting ideas above my station.
I've been doing longer turns and not getting dropped so I guess I'm getting carried away with myself because without sounding too girly and naive I bloody love it!

Anyway I'm off out now to uphold the glorious English tradition of binge drinking. Probably why I'm no good.
Bet I get a pasting on Tuesday.
Cheers all
