I just had a message from my commuting partner, Andrew Thompson, who shares the morning headwind into Nottingham with me, that BBC East Midlands are doing a piece on bike commuting featuring him.
The national news are featuring fuel prices on Thursday, and the local news are using this item as a follow up.
They filmed it yesterday, and it sounds like the producer was genuinely interested in cycling as transport, not looking for a piece about "lycra louts" or "eco-freaks". They filmed him over breakfast talking about the benefits of cycling, time and money saved, health benefits, and the need to share space on the road. And they took plenty of riding shots over which they will play the interview.
I think it will represent cycling properly. Rather than showing someone pootling on a mountain bike with carrier bags on the handlebars, saddle too low, and knees round their ears and soft tyres. This guy is a sub 20 minute tester with power to waste. The speedo of the car they were filming him from was registering 30 as he was riding along Mapperley top which probably means he was cruising at about 26mph.
He's a good representative of cycling, and a good choice for the media. I couldn't possibly do it, I'm Mr. Angry! Andrew is calm and managerial. A respectable taxpayer with 2 cars in the family. It should be good for us.
Try to watch it if you can and try to get your friends and family to watch it. _________________ I don't enjoy golf. BAN IT. |
