Hello all,

Well, the sun is shining, the air is warm, trees are blossoming, so it must be well into Spring and therefore it also means the Hemel club tens are starting!

The first ten mile time trial starts this Thursday April 23rd - St Georges day - at 7pm from the usual HQ at Great Gaddesden village hall on the Leighton Buzzard road (A4146).

Format is as before, with the first few starting at the earlier 7pm slot due to the relative lack of late evening light, then moves to the usual 7:30 start, until the last two in August where again the light forces us to 7pm again.

Cost of entry is £2 for Hemel club members (including 2nd claim), and £3 for non club members - a credit crunch beating amount that has not increased on last year! Please note that Hemel members who have yet to pay their 2009 subs will be expected to pay that before their entry fee!

As usual for Hemel club members as well as the discounted entry fee, we run several season long competitions, and also a few one-off events too.

The season long competitions include a points based scratch competition for men and separate one for women, with the best 10 scores to count, and a handicap points competition for all riders. For the veteran riders (aged 40+) there is the season long competition to see who can beat the Vets standard time for their age by the biggest margin.

Of the one-off races, there is the Longmarkers Trophy - where a rider who has not beaten 25 minutes in recent years can win on scratch again similar such riders - this excludes the faster riders from the competition. This is normally held as the 2nd complete event of the year, so should happen next week. Later in the season there is the handicap 10, which the fastest person on handicap wins - and as it's handicapped all eligible riders should have a chance. Should be held on 30 July

Sometime during the middle of the season we take a one week break from the 10's to tackle the hilly event - a 3 lap event that does a 6.5 mile loop up and around the back of the clubroom - youth riders only need do 2 laps. There are trophy's up for grabs for seniors, juniors and youth riders. This event will be held on 25 June, and as it's a longer event, the start time is 7pm.

Over the last few years we also have run one of the 10's in the style (loosely) of the World Hour Record, where time trial bikes and all similar aerodynamic aids are banned, so road bikes with normal spoked wheels. This will be held on the week after the hilly on 2 July.

Riders from other CTT registered clubs are welcome to enter and ride these events, although if the rider limits are reached then preference will be given to Hemel riders.. So far we have only reached the limit once - but didn't exceed it! For this year I have managed to get an extention of the limit so we should be OK.

All events are designated as 'Come & Try', which means guest riders who are not yet members of a club can ride to test out if they like the sport. Normally this is available for a couple of events, after which you should make a decision as to what club you want to join (we do not insist it is our club - but you are welcome!).

Fuller details of the events, the competitions and more can be found on the club website, and the results will be posted as soon as possible each evening on the club forum, followed later by and email out to all with full results and write-up, which will also be placed on the website.

The 2009 Marshalling Rota was issued at the beginning of March, so you should have marked down in your calendars, etc. what you are expected to do. I did hear back from a couple of people about some dates changed or being unable to, but for some reason I cannot now find those emails, so if you did have a problem, then please resend that to me asap so it can be sorted out.
See the rota attached for confirmation of what was sent out 7 weeks ago (please note that I put the hilly and the athletes 10 the wrong way around on the rota - please swap the weeks around - the marshals are allocated to the event, not the date!).

I'm HHCC so come say hi if you show up!

Looks like a tailwind out tomorrow which is a component of a fast night for that course as its longer on the way out and mostly uphill in that direction!
