I took a ride up the climb used for the national this year this morning. i was'nt sure exactly where it starts from so i just rode hard from the steel works at the bottom.

It is steep but no steeper than some of the other bug*ers i'd just been over on the way. As has been said the road is well broken up in places. I took about 5 mins from the bottom and about 4 mins from the first bend to the top (as it starts going downhill)

Does anyone know exactly where it starts and finishes?

Never mind the hill climb, when's the descending championship? CTT are missing out on another odd race they could have!

Derby Mercury have a club freewheeling competition. Or a club "stick it in 53/12 and give it some when you're out of sight of everyone", which is how a 10 stone Kelloggs miraculously won the trophy one year

Google "Pea Royd Lane ghost", then click some undoubtedly reliable links and start reading. Shocked .

According to one, "monks were pretty evil when you think about it". I love "when you think about it" as a rhetorical device. It basically means anyone disagreeing hasn't thought about it and can't possibly have anything to add.

In days of old we used to do both on the same day, ride the club hill climb then have the freewheeling race going back down (that's if we all made it to the top!). Simple device to prevent cheating, toestrap arounf LH crank and chainstay. Quite interesting for the fixed gear brigade!

When I rode the Archer hill climb, it was on Rectory Hill in Amersham; try a freewheeling contest from there and we'd all have ended up in Fred's Caff. As we probably did anyway, I guess.

Thurcroft CC are running the event, I can't post the URL because of Usage of forbidden words??? Pop in Thurcroft CC in Google and click on 2009 National Hillclimb.

The climb starts just after the roundabout. The finish is just before the road bends round to the right. See yellow line on this pic:

The lower section isn't too bad at all. The right turn on to PeaRoyd Lane is where it kicks and then it just continues up.

There is a brief respite just after the bridge over the dual carriage way but it soon ramps up again. I've rode the past hillclimbs that started at the Steel Works gates and that was bad enough!

If you fancy a warm up event, Thurcroft are running their usual Open Hillclimb on Pea Royd Lane on 4th October!!

you will need a qualifying ride at another hillclimb, normally a full field

It is isn't it Laughing

I have just re-read this and realise that your advice about needing qualifying rides may have been aimed at the thread in general so withdraw my sarcastic comment Wink

It's a fair point, you can't just rock up to the start and get a ride, you need some results on your entry form.

More or less I think Ivan, I had a dodge up it on Sunday on the way home from the Rake, it was pretty windy which made the section after you swing the righthander onto Pea Royd Lane pretty grim.
I reckon if you go too hard from the bottom to the bridge then you'll lose shed loads of time as the last quarter mile averages around 14%

That course is too long on that map - it starts up the straight a bit more, not at the roundabout. The finish is before the bend at the top.
