|The weather was fine and dry with a helpful breeze across the top of the climb; however it wasn’t sufficiently windy enough for anyone to take home the generous £100 donated by Martin Smith Opticians for beating the course record. The good conditions were evident, however, with 6 riders going under 10 minutes. The fight for the first two places was tight, with last years second place Dave Clarke getting the better of last years winner, James Dobbin, by 4 seconds. Veteran Chris Myhill finished in his usual 3rd place just 6 seconds off the vets record he set last year. Ashfield took the team prize with their riders well grouped in 8th, 10th and 12th place. Buxton CC, with their two riders occupying 4th and 6th, promised to bring a full complement for next year.
Ride of the day undoubtedly came from Alex Deck who removed a shade over 8 seconds from the ladies record set 5 years previously. This was some feat; as it is generally recognised that the 2004 edition of the race enjoyed the best conditions in the event’s history, with records set in all but one category.
The race once again offered a substantial prize fund thanks to sponsorship from Martin Smith Opticians, Polaris, Alistair Smith, Moore Large, JE James Cycles and Columbia Caravans. Due to the fact that October 2010 will have 5 Sundays; next years race will not clash with the adjacent Matlock events. The promoters are hoping, therefore, to attract a large field and to encourage participation a ‘buy one get one free’ entry system will operate. Riders in this year’s race who bring along a participant who has not previously ridden Beeley will both be able to enter for a single entry fee of £7.50.
Finally, it is with thanks to the timekeepers and helpers without whose support the event would not be possible.
