|
|
For the past few years I've been MTB-ing, including competitively in marathon and stage race events, and have now got to the point where I'd like to start exploring road racing type events. I spend a lot of my training time on the road bike anyway, but know very little about the custom and practice of road events, other than sportives, which doesn't really count.
I've got a racing licence when I remember to renew it, so I know I could rock up at a cat3/4 event, but I'm not sure I want to go in 'cold'...!
So, question is, am I best to follow the club route to learn the ropes etc? If so, which Notts based clubs would be most welcoming to someone in my situation
Thanks folks

I approve of this sentiment.
Dunno about oop north, but in general a club is the best place to start - get used to riding in groups, go to a few chaingangs so you know what to do if you get in breaks, then avit. |

I'd try out all the local clubs - depending on what part of Notts - do the local chaingangs and see which clubs are best represented on there. If you want to road race then some clubs have very few if any riders racing so they probably aren't the places to start looking. |

Thanks for the advice - going to make contact with a few local clubs etc. Interesting point about not all of them road racing Tom - I guess I'd just assumed they would all have racers, but lookign at some, they appear very time trial-oriented.

Hello Richard and welcome.
Which part of Notts? its a big county, and how old are you?
Yes some clubs are dominated by tt, but most will have at least one or two road racers.
Any club would be good, but it sometimes takes some time to find one which suits your needs best. _________________ Users browsing this forum: None |

Notts isn't in the North. Go on BC website and look up central clubs. There are a lot of good old riders in Notts - many of whom post here - whether they're in a racing club or not, someone should point you in the right direction. Good luck! _________________ Na na na na na |

To be honest, although most clubs have a few road racing members, I'd say Ashfield Road Club are probably your best bet to learn the ropes. Many road racers seem to belong to a Racing Team rather than a club as such, but Ashfield probably has a higher proportion of road racers.
Sherwood/Nottm Clarion/Mapperley are more TT orientated and VC Nottm are mainly veterans and ladies racing.
Chaingangs - there's the GoSports/VCNottm/Sherwood Chaingang that meets at Lowdham Island at 6.30pm on Weds starting this week, or the Beeston chaingang, which meet in Beeston and head out through Long Eaton. |

just you wait till George gets hold of you
Yes ashfield does have a high proportion of racers, but I see you failed to mention heanor clarion or long eaton cc, theey also have quite a number of road racers.
I wish I had had the choice of clubs there is round here, when I was younger, why does the midlands have so many clubs?
Changing the subject slightly, why does loughborough phoenix not appear on the bc website? anyone got any contact info? _________________ Users browsing this forum: None |

VC Long Eaton is a good club but I'm not sure they've got anyone first claim road racing at the moment have they ? If you are that side of Nottm they are worth a look though.
A lot of good riders do tend to join teams now - I think VCLE have a few women racing for teams who are second claim Long Eaton and we (Derby Merc) have quite a few 2/3/4 cat racing but nobody higher first claim road racing. |

Wow - thanks for all the input.
Glad to see I managed to initiate a geography quiz too!
For whoever asked, I'm in Ruddington, and in my 'late' 30s ! |
