Well, not exactly. But 10 miles in 17m 41s in the Westerley TT tonight on Hillingdon circuit by Stephen Slade is faster than Bradley Wiggins' record.

Perhaps it should be mentioned that he was riding a streamlined recumbent machine. So perhaps the CTT might be a touch fussy about accepting it as a record.

Whatever, it was a very impressive sight on this somewhat twisting 0.94 mile circuit that is not flat and full marks for getting round the quite sharp U-turn at such a speed. That turn has brought down its fair share of conventional bicycle racers over the years because they have over cooked it.

The regulars in these time trials reckon the circuit 10-mile to be at least two minutes slower than a normal out and back course. So I wonder what Stephen Slade would do on a conventional course and whether he has tried it.

What was the previous record (on a more conventional bike)?
Faired recumbents typically go a third to 50% quicker on longer distance events so whilst it's quick, it's not a surprise to be that much faster.
Over short (straight line 200-500m) distances they can be at up to double the speed for a normal bike.

IIRC Andy Wilkinson has, on (in?) a faired recumbent, beaten the following "normal bike" records:
End to End (his own record, or had Gethin Butler lowered it by then)
4000m (doing far more than 4000m in the process of completing 16 laps of Manchester velodrome) - record C Boardman
Isle of Man TT circuit - record C Boardman.

Come to think of it, I actually did not see whoever was in the enclosed machine. Stephen Slade was the name written on the timekeepers sheet, but now you have me wondering. Could it have been .....? Surely not? But perhaps.
