I'm 5ft 7, weigh 11st 3.
BMI is 23/24.
According to the NHS I'm at the upper end of what is acceptable.
I'm carrying a bit round the middle (well I'm 45) compare to when I was a youngster. However by no stretch of the imagination am I overweight
in a layman's eyes.
So is this BMI really all it's cracked up to be?

Its at best a guide, innit? It needs to be something that the average person can understand, just like the 5-a-day fruit thing.

Using BMI, Sir Chris is morbidly obese, according to urban legend.
The fitter and more muscular you are, the worse it is.
Body fat index is a little better.
Latest newspaper bolleaux (Times today) is that the oldest of all -- simple waist measurement -- is the best indicator. _________________ "For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong." H. L. Mencken

Mine was 25.9 last time i got weighed.
Asked the nurse "do i look overweight" and she couldn't answer.
I think a lot of cyclists have bigger legs than the rest of the population and this skews it a bit.
i've got decent muscle definition and you can probably count all of my ribs quite easily!!! |

Pile o'shyte. My doctor always gets me to be weighed and gets upset because my weight fluctuates... Here's the deal - I ride a lot in Summer and not so much in winter - your the Dr. do the Physics!! For me to be slap bang in the middle of my BMI i need to weigh something like 11stone. I haven't been eleven since I was 17/18..... _________________ Imagination is the war against reality.... |

Questions:
1. Why would a medical doctor "do" physics?
2. Why don't you eat less in the winter when you is not riding your bike? |

I've always understood that muscle weighs a lot more than fat. So well trained bodies could look good and yet register a high BMI. I now weigh exactly the same as in my racing days yet I cannot put on and button up one of my suit jackets from the 1980's, let alone the 1960's.
Height now 5'-8", weight 10st 4 lbs, actual waist 35". I guess that I now have a 'low muscle mass'.
I'm the 'skinny one' 2nd left, Helyett, behind John Woodburn, with Dennis Tarr to right. From Isle of Man Pro Race, 1962.

Gosh comments to die for, guys and dolls, thankyou.
Truly NOT a star, but I put the effort in and was 'there' at some great moments which, looking back, is far better than having just read about it. I don't regret 'having a go'.
I found that Helyett bike 'interesting'. Was VERY disappointed when I was first given it. With 31" inside leg length, I'd generally ridden a 22" (54cm) or 22.5" frame and this one was probably a 56cm. The headtube is quite long, in the photo, but, the 'ride and handling' was really great. Best I ever had, in those days. It was a standard Helyett team bike, which meant it had the same kit as Anquetil though there were stories that those guys had personally built frames, sprayed in team colours, but that would have probably been the only difference. How different things are today! |

Funny that ...... but I don't recall his name
He was skipping about, handing Dennis a bottle, guess he was a Condor Man!
Another guy collecting empties.
Which other riders can you spot and name? |
