Do folk generally train specifically for these then, or is it usually more a case of just being fit already through training/racing over the summer?

Train, no. Probably make yourself ill!

Hmm well I don't want that.

Think I'll just re-watch some Grand Tour mountain stages I've got recorded and read a few issues of Cycling Active. It's all about tactics rather than fitness anyway.

I read in Cycling Active that you should set yourself realistic training goals, so I'm aiming to be as fit as Juan Jose Cobo by late October.

Have you tried eating beetroot and increasing your cadence?

I'll have to save those performance enhancers for next season; if I get too good this season then people will never believe that I'm a clean rider.

I've actually had my eye on this one for a while but as it happens I can't make the 9th.

Would you consider moving the whole thing to another date to fit in with my plans? I guarantee that I'll either better Malcolm Elliott's record time or slowly weave over the line, face contorted in agony and covered in my own sick. Either way the spectators will love it.
