I am replacing the chain on my bike so will I have to change the cassette as well or will I get away with not replacing it? I have done about 1700 miles on the bike and the chain is being replaced because I damaged one of the links when taking it off to get cleaned after a good soaking last Wednesday. I don't want to buy a new casette for the sake of it so do you think I will get away with not putting a new one in for now?

Well in my opinion the chain was kept clean so whether that is clean enough I am not sure. Is there any way I can tell when I put the new chain on whether the cassette needs changing or not or is it just good practise to change then every so often? Some people have said that they last about 1 cassette for every 2/3 chains, while others ghave said they should be changed together.

I'll get straight to the point like a arrow or a dart.
If it's Sora/Xenon, then get a new cassette while you are at it. If it's Record/Red/Dura Ace, don't bother. All down to simple economics in the end.
And while I am on. Don't you tickle my foot bottom ha ha baby please.

I got a new bike earlier in the year and have done about 1700 miles on it as it happens. Nearly all dry miles and I have kept the chain clean (Chorus 11). I bought one of those chain checker things and it hasn't reached the 0.75% wear yet. I used a new pair of race wheels with a brand new cassette on Sunday and it ran fine.

Of course it did. No different to car servicing where they tell you that you need your brake fluid changing, or your air con servicing, or your brake pads changing every 500 miles. All complete minge whiff. |

Done about 1700 myself on a SRAM groupset with a Shimano chain, always kept it cleaned and just changed that, it's been fine.
Oh and chain checkers are a bit suspect.. |

Ah, my first road bike - I used the same chain & cassette for about 18 months, only changed it when it was impossible to ride above 20mph before the chain started skipping. Happy days. |

And I have checked all of my bikes and the cassettes are not made of plasticine.
