It's blatently gonna be a sprint finish, Milran (?) are gonna be busting a gut to keep it together for Ale Jet, and so are Quick Step for Boonen, likewise Lotto will be ridding of McEwen, any non sprinter ridding at the front is gonna stick out like a swore thumb and will be chased down immediately, only a superman could ride off the front. Or someone in even better form than Bettini was in a few years back, which is rare. _________________ Going out the back in style since 2002. |

yep I can foresee the "curse of the rainbow jersey" (copyright every cyclign journo for the past 25yrs) happening to Boonen just as he looks set to win MSR.... _________________ The internet is possibly the greatest bitch fest on earth. My money's on Oscar Freire as his Rabo boys will be underdogs and won't need to keep it together for one man. With the two Dekkers, Boogerd, and Flecha they can launch off towards the last 100km while Freire sits in the wheels, takes a free ride and pips Ale-Jet and Boonen by a whisker. |

I can't see the reasoning. If Petacchi arrives well placed with 200 metres to go he'll have had just the same protection as anyone. Sure, Boonen and Friere are fast, but Petacchi is the fastest now.
For my money, Boonen won't win unless Petacchi is dropped and both of them will know this. Boonen is on form. I think all hell will break loose on the Poggio, even more than usual, and a tiny group will contest the sprint without Petacchi. Well anyway that's kind of what I'd like to see, something exciting. _________________ "For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong." H. L. Mencken

The Radio Times describe it as " at 3,000 km, the longest one day classic"
3000km in a day, that's an average speed of around 78mph, bloody lycra louts! |

I think Boonen will beat Petacchi just going on what I saw last week. I can't see the Milram train doing the business and I thought Boonen looked in better form last week. Hushovd looked like he had some speed too if he can get it right tactically. |

This race isn't decided by who is fastest on paper, or in the stage race the week before, its decided by who can produce the best sprint after over 290km including those last couple of climbs. Boonen has the edge on Petacchi in this respect imo. I agree with those who think Friere is in with a shout. His big wins have usually been when he has generally been overlooked. You can never rule him out. |

I think someone like Igor Astarloa could surprise everyone by getting away...but it will more than likely come down to a sprint.
I'd put my money on Petacchi in a sprint with Zabel dropping him off with less than 150m to go. I don't think Freire or Boonen could get past that, so.
1. Petacchi
2. Boonen
3. Freire
Bettini won't be feeling too good at all, but he'll be brave! Hushovd won't be far off but won't have the legs. Watch for Nuyens and Knaven on the Poggio working for Boonen! |
