He has ridden at every Commonwealth Games for NI since 1994, when I had the "pleasure" of riding on his wheel in the 100km TTT. |
As Griffo once said, the 100km is the purist bike race. Having ridden an 80km one (4 up) I can see what he means. hurt like a beeeeeeyatch. I wish they'd bring it back _________________ wishing my bike fitted as badly as Rich Hill's ... |

Seriously tho'... both times are flying! Well done to all! Now we need to see someone beat 18.48 on a road bike! No discs, no tri-bars! |
out of interest was it actually a standard road bike or was it a TT bike without disc & tribars? |
PNut... just my normal 753 roadie... took the cage off too! |
That was on the Thanet way wasn't it? |
From Chainline issue 1 early season 1992-
"Flashback to Colin Sturgess's 10 mile Competion Record
Set on 2nd July 1988 at 18:48 <this> remains the first and only sub 19 minute ride for the distance and the only one (apart from Matthew Illingworth's 19:00 last year) to have beaten Dave Lloyd's 19:11 set in 1981. ...Always a fluid pedaller, he used gears which would be considered low by many of his contemporaries."I've always been able to spin. I went out on 52x14 and 52x15 and back from the turn in 52x14 until the last few hundred yards or so when I dropped it in the 13 sprocket"...In the days before disc wheels his bike was fitted with 28-spoke wheels...of the traffic flow he recalls "It was fairly heavy that evening. i prefer to ride on quieter roads." The N1/10 course on the Great North Road between Sawtry and Norman Cross roundabout is no longer available. We suspect that it will take a long time to beat 18:48 on any stretch of road." |
