During my last couple of road rides my shoes have had a thorough drenching. Now when they dry out they absoloutely stink. The smell is so bad I thought one of the cats had been peeing somewhere in the room, but it's definately just my shoes.
Can anyone reccommend a good cleaner for bike shoes? Can insoles be machine washed, although I think it's more the uppers that smell? _________________ My peephole pringle is modelled on an SAS balaclava |

Put them in a big sock and lob them in the machine. _________________ "Well done, you are 100% absolutely without a shadow of a doubt spot-bollock-on correct." - Tucker

Had a similar issue myself a couple of years back – training in the French Alps, Sept 2008, had a day or two of torrential rain, needless to say, I wasn’t prepared on day one and had a three hour ride in awful conditions, my Shimano shoes at the time got soaked, they then stunk! I opted to put them inside a *CENSORED* cover and run them through a 40 degree wash (was worried about the carbon sole and ratchet etc, but they were fine)
My Specalized shoes that I’m currently using have also been subject to the washing machine on more than one occasion – if you can wrap them up (more to protect the washing machine drum) they’ll be fine!
Good luck |

Keep them somewhere where the smell can't affect you.
Apparently the whiff comes from one of the materials used for the uppers... it has open fibres that bacteria just love to get into and breed and have a lovely time. Hard to get rid of once they are in there.
Ho hum. |
