Any tips for someone who hasn't raced in an age for some local racing in the East Midlands?
I have no clue as to whether if I turn up at Darley Moor or Mallory Park if I'll be blown out of the back within metres....
So - basically, how tough are the courses and what's the pace like for a humble Cat 4?
Any advice would be good.
Cheers

Start by competing in your own category if the races are available and then build up.
You could be disheatened if you race an E1234 instead of a 34.
Then again you might lap the elites!! _________________ And the senses being dulled are mine. |

Darley Moor is pan flat but always windy, apart from having to sprint out of one hairpin you can sit in all the way 'usually'.
Have a look at the Victoria Park crits in Leamington - pan flat and according to BC calendar theres a 4ths only category, plus you get two rides on the day _________________ World Masters Drive HillClimb For Taureans Category C Champion 2013.

If you are over 40 then LVRC is an option |

Looks like Darley Moor's my best bet - I'll see how I manage the local chain gangs first though... |

If you can stay with the Wednesday night Lowdham Chaingang I would be confident that you'd have no problem staying with the 3/4ths Darley bunch. _________________ Hoping the race organiser will give me a postcode to find the headquarters hidden in the wilderness.

I've been chatting with people on some of the local rides and it seems that Mallory Park would be best for Cat 3/4 races on Tuesday evenings. Where the heck do I find information about them i.e. where/when/how I enter?
I've looked around, but no joy so far.
Cheers! |

Good call, get to know a few of the racing lads, they will be more than happy to offer advice if you are keen. _________________ I was being chased by a police dog last week, and made the mistake of trying to escape through a little tunnel, over a see-saw and through a hoop of fire. It finally caught me as I was weaving in and out of some sticks. |

Turn up, pay your £10, race. Simples. (Assuming you have a licence - if not, day licence for about a tenner IIRC) _________________ http://tinyurl.com/4n4ed7r

Dodged it last week due to a beast of a cold, but gave Mallory a go today since I felt a fair bit better.
Awesome experience overall. I felt pretty good so ended up adopting Jens Voigt's riding style by attacking with 26, 15 and 10 laps to go (I still don't know why I did this), chasing down a few breaks and somehow ending up on the front on the final lap. I'm clearly a bit retarded as everyone else seemed happy to sit in the bunch for the entire race
Consequently in the finale my legs popped mid sprint so I drifted back whilst a nasty crash happened right in front of me which I somehow dodged...
Roll on next week |

Questions to ask yourself;
Why did you chase down the breaks?
Why did you ride on the front in the last lap? _________________ Follow my blog...or don't

Because it was his first race? _________________ I was being chased by a police dog last week, and made the mistake of trying to escape through a little tunnel, over a see-saw and through a hoop of fire. It finally caught me as I was weaving in and out of some sticks. |

I don't know who wrote this article but it makes light reading. I think the nub of it is that you need brains as well as brawn sometimes to win a race!

Rider A is so powerful and has such endurance that he can ride alone faster than any of the others, who will be
unable to stay with him, and he will therefore win alone and unaided.
Rider B has so fast a sprint that no-one can beat him, and he persuades the others (by whatever means) to carry him
in shelter to the finish, where he is unbeatable.
Rider C is such a dominant climber that if there’s any kind of a hill on the course he will drop the others and win
alone.
ummm...which type of rider are you? |

Rider D. Rides round at the back, gets dropped on the first climb and accepts that his entry money was no more than a donation to the prize fund. |

rider E, P and O has a laugh and a joke at the front of the pack before riding off solo as though drafting behind Jocky Wilson on a quad bike |
